Default Averted Second Fort Hood Shooting

I thought we had a thread on the Fort Hood shooting, which I was looking to add this, as a "almost deja vu" ... but Search didn't turn it up, so starting a fresh thread.

    Possible Fort Hood Attack Thwarted?
An AWOL U.S. soldier was arrested the evening of July 27 on an outstanding child pornography warrant in Killeen, Texas, and is suspected to have been plotting an attack on Fort Hood. The suspect, Pfc. Nasser Jason Abdo from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was reportedly arrested by the Killeen Police Department after an alert citizen noticed he was acting suspiciously and called police. Local TV station KCEN said explosives were found in his car, and FOX News is reporting two other U.S. military personnel have been arrested and that weapons and explosives were also found in their possession. According to STRATFOR sources in the U.S. law enforcement community, a reported plot by three U.S. military personnel to attack Fort Hood was in the advanced stages of planning.

Though there is no confirmation that an attack was in the works, the reports are reason for concern. STRATFOR has written about the possibility of grassroots plots, particularly in revenge for the killing of Osama bin Laden. The fear is that Abdo or the other two suspects were planning an attack similar to U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who carried out one of the few successful grassroots attacks in the United States due to his tactical choice an armed assault.

The most notable aspect in the thwarting of this alleged plot is that it appears that an alert citizen may have prevented the potential attack. KCEN reported that someone noticed the main suspect, Abdo, acting suspiciously outside an America’s Best Value Inn in Killeen and reported him to police. Police found that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Fort Campbell over child pornography found on his government computer.

Abdo was previously stationed in Fort Hood, so he may have been hiding with the help of friends and could have used his knowledge of the base to plan such an attack. Abdo went AWOL on July 4, right before he was scheduled for his first deployment to Afghanistan. He had previously had his application for conscientious objector status approved but was being investigated for child pornography before he could be discharged. Due to the investigation he could not be discharged, and that may have been his reason for going AWOL. He had also done major media interviews about his experience in the military while applying for conscientious objector status. The identities and arrest locations of the other two U.S. military personnel are unclear.

STRATFOR will continue to investigate the details of this alleged plot. At this point, it serves as a reminder that citizens can serve as defenders against grassroots attacks.
So apparently AWOL soldier was likely a brown muslim ... incidentally *did* have his "conscientious objector status" approved, but instead choose to confirm TheE's fears of "please let it not be another brown person".

Okay, scratch that, was not brown ... as I just checked CNN to see if they had a similar story, and they do have pictures of the arrested GI.

[Updated at 11:00 a.m.] Texas police arrested a U.S. soldier who went AWOL this month after being charged with possessing child pornography, a Defense Department official told CNN Thursday.

Pfc. Naser Abdo was assigned to Fort Campbell in Kentucky but was arrested in Killeen, Texas, near Fort Hood, the military base where a 2009 shooting spree left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded.

Killeen police received a call from a gun shop owner about a suspicious man in the store who was asking questions about 40-caliber ammunition and then bought three boxes of 12-gauge ammunition and a magazine for a pistol, the defense official said. He paid cash and left in a cab. He then went to a surplus store and allegedly bought a military uniform.

FBI agents searching the soldier's hotel room found gunpowder, shotgun shells, a pressure cooker, 18 pounds of sugar, four magazines and ammunition, the defense official said. The FBI is investigating the case.
The unfortunate part is that it took a link to being charged with child pornography to facilitate the investigative string of events (police acted once they determined there was an outstanding warrant) ... but at least another potential travesty was averted.

I admit pretty much a complete ignorance of firearms or explosives, what is the sugar and pressure cooker about?

Sugar plus Sulphuric Acid can start a fire due to the chemical reaction, it's good for an initiator for things. If it is fine powdered sugar, it can be used as a dust explosive on it's own, like flour or fine sawdust powder.

I would imagine that a pressure cooker can easily be modified to close the emergency pressure release mechanism, usually a rubber gasket, in order to build up gasses within to facilitate a powerful explosion. Glucose is a stable energy source.

    Neg rep me please.
