The scaling forks are awl-pike base weapons with damage potential similar to the lance.

    The + 60 + d40 roll is rank 5 truehand.

would there be any advantage to figuring out a way to preserve one of those forks?

i found one in my cloak, dunno how it got in there, but wondering if it would be worth preserving for enchanting purposes

when you say similar damage potential, do you mean less or more?

the problem is it crumbles when i touch it (got one in there before somehow)

There's no advantage to keeping it. You can purchase awl-pikes. Gratkor's Cart in the roped-off clearing north of the North Gate in the landing sells them for a couple of hundred silver (0x). You can special order a vultite one for around 100k.

If you follow the polearms link I posted, you can see the AvD and DF comparison between lances and awl-pikes. They both have 9 sec base RTs but the awl-pike is much lighter (8 lbs) compared to the lance (15 lbs). Against plate class armor they have identical AvDs and DFs.
