Finish up 1xing perception because it helps with SMR and SMRv2 defense and it's really cheap to train in.

Probably then finish up 3xing in spells.

Personally I would then 1x in CMAN, it also helps with SMR and SMRv2 defense plus pures get access to some useful ones now. Combat Movement is free 10 DS at 5 ranks, why not? Cunning Defense gives some more defense against all CMANs. You also have Side by Side if you hunt in a group then it's some free DS too. You can also train in Disarm Weapon or Feint, if for nothing else than to get more defense against those two CMANs.

Right now my goal is to finish his wizard spells and continue with earth lore, not sure where I will stop with that. After that, who knows....

I would get rid of shield/brawl unless there's some RP reason for it. You can reinvest those points in other skills.

I'd do 2x perception first since its weighed the same as CM when it comes to SMRv2. It's also significantly cheaper. After that I'd wrap up 3x spells before moving onto CM. I'd also tweak the lores a bit but a lot of that is more preference (outside of ranks needed for steam).
    Elementary my dear Watson!

I'm surprised slightly, i guess at cap brawling is just a side note, but why not finish out the brawling skill, just cause.

My UAC mage has been a brawler since day one. I admit, it was never what you would term an easy path, but he hunts with my pure mage so it works out pretty well. That is the other thing, like Sherlock suggested I will be finishing up perception since it is so cheap. If you are going to be a melee mage you will need a lot of earth lore, since it helps in both offense and defense and don't forget to 902 your gear with evoke.
