Sentinels Snake Clench

I routinely have to have to clench 3+ times which is not ideal since I need my runestaff and sometimes that clench failure knocks you prone.

Is there anything I can do or train to increase the success I have when I clench or is it just a complete crapshoot?

As annoying as it sounds, I feel I have a better success rate when I run to the sanctuary altar before attempting. That maneuver is seriously enough to make anyone just train shield use and call it a day though.
