Seems like it gets worse every day. Today's latest is Trump creating a commission for "patriotic education". This is Russia/North Korea kind of stuff- State-sponsored propaganda in the classroom to replace academic freedom.
When you start adding all of this up, it starts getting REALLY scary. There are things going on in this country right now that I never thought I'd see.
Attacks on the Exercise of Free Speech:
It turns out that Barr was telling Prosecutors to go for Sedition charges against protesters. The State punishing people exercising the right to protest with Sedition charges is dictatorship territory.
State sponsored violence against peaceful protesters: turns out that the DC National Guard was already stockpiling munitions and was trying to get ahold of dangerous weapons to use against the peaceful protesters who were cleared from in front of that Church for a photo op.
And of course, sending Federal forces off of Federal property to "preemptively" arrest protesters by throwing them in unmarked vans and driving away- sending Federal forces (Customs and Border officials who had no jurisdiction) out against US citizens.
Meanwhile, US law enforcement has been attacking the press who are covering the protests- singling them out for harassment in many cases.
And all the while, Trump has been referring to Americans who are exercising their right to Free Speech as terrorists- which is something that doesn't happen in free societies.
Threats to unleash the US Military against US Citizens on US soil (which has never happened in the history of our country, as far as I know):
Trump has deployed US military assets at protests around the country- something that, again, does NOT happen in Free Societies. It's serious enough that 280 former National Security officials came together to warn the country about what he's been doing.
Trump has threatened to deploy the US military against any Democrats who protest the election on election night via the Insurrection Act- the US Government deploying the military against its citizens on election day. Just think about that one for a moment.
Meanwhile, the President's allies are actively encouraging him to declare Martial law if he loses the election.
And Trump isn't condemning them at all- which suggests that he thinks it's potentially appropriate.
Sowing Doubt About our Election Process While Actively Working to Undermine It (i.e. how dictators stay in power):
Trump has repeatedly attacked mail in voting, telling people that they'll never actually know who won
Meanwhile as he attacks the validity of our elections, he's actively encouraging people to vote twice. He's trying to get them to engage in voter fraud. No US President has ever encouraged his supporters to actively engage in voter fraud.
He's actually floated the idea of delaying our elections until some unspecified period of time. Authoritarians do that. Leaders of Democratic Free Societies do not.
He has already repeatedly told people that the upcoming election will be the "most inaccurate and fraudulent" election in history
He's threatened to send law enforcement to polling locations on election day. State-sponsored intimidation through the presence of state law enforcement officers is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes.
And of course there's the giant list of things Trump and the GOP are doing to make it harder for people to vote- trying to force people into a situation where they have to choose between their health and their voice
Refusing to Agree to Peaceful Transition of Power
Probably the scariest parts of his rhetoric are the elements where he flat out refuses to agree to peaceful transition of power.
Meanwhile he's already talking about having a third term because he's entitled to it- with no regard for the law on the matter. Again, we used to be the leader of the free world. This kind of talk doesn't happen in free societies.
We're beyond red lights. We're beyond bemusement. This man is willing to do anything to stay in power. If he gets another 4 years, that's a lot of time to replace military leaders with "yes men" who will do whatever he wants. That's a lot of time to continue to transform the DoJ into an attack dog against his political opponents and American citizens who dare to protest his administration.
Trump supporters are playing with fire right now: risking our entire Democracy. I just hope people wake up before it's too late.
