The source on it being a US Submarine attacking the Russian one is very, very shaky. A Russian nuclear sub in or near Alaskan waters did have a major fire that caused the deaths of 14 sailors though.

Duh. That's why it was underwater. Water puts fire out, so the further underwater you are, the faster it gets to the fire when the hull breaches. Edit: Plus in Armageddon, it was the Russian guy, not the Americans, who knew how to fix the equipment and save earth. With a bigass wrench and a can-do attitude.
