LOL. I actually have like 5 zip disks I need a zip drive to see whats on them. Nothing important I'm sure... probably GS logs and maybe some porn.

In other news, a quick search on the old interwebs popped up this big ass desktop.

I want it only because it's big and has purdy leds. Why the fuck do we need leds anyway?

Don't get a big computer. The bigger the computer, the bigger the explosion.

Has a 1080 and a decent CPU, biggest things you're looking for. Alienware has absolutely retarded case design which make futureproofing hard if not impossible, and they run hot. You'll want an SSD for a windows boot.
Thanks. I put an SSD in my (old) computer, IIRC 80GB just for windows boot drive and it's worked fine and still seems fine, slave drive is quarter terabyte uh..HDD I think. Worth it to migrate over the SSD or just start new do you think? I'd prefer to get a cooler machine if you have a rec... always seem to push the heat envelope when I'm doing complex calculations (again, R and python stuff).

As an aside, the upgrade to the 2080ti is worth it. Games aren't worth playing unless you can play them at 200 FPS faster than your eye can see and your monitor can display.

I always prefer a fresh install, less issues that way.

For cases, I recommend Corsair. They are solid and I like the more understated ones (I have a C70).

At this point we're doing custom builds so just get a 1080 - 2080ti, i7 9700/8700 (k if you want to OC for your programming), and a PSU, RAM, and motherboard to taste. Maybe a small closed loop watercooler. All that should be well under $2000 depending on the GPU.

Its a good time to go for a silent PC build, its so awesome to hear basically nothing*.
    - ssd ... silent, go with the little thumbstick drives that attach directly to the motherboard without a cable... like a samsung evo
    - get a fanless PSU, there are some 500w ones that would be good amount
    - to do a fanless CPU, you need to find less than 65w TDP and put a huge heatsink on it.
    - many GPUs are semi-fanless, meaning they have a fan but it won't run unless you are playing a game.

    * sometimes you hear inductor whine when there are no fans to cover it up, sounds like leaves rustling though which doesn't piss me off too much

If you can't build it yourself, I don't have any experience with this company, but their shit looks great from looking at their website:

So this is the one I put together a couple of weeks ago:

    My Build.jpg

I went with a sort of meh video card because I do not play any heavy graphic games, but I can drive up to 4 monitors with that card. I also upgraded from the stock Ryzen cooler, probably did not need to since the one that comes with the 2700X is pretty damn good, but I figured a radiator would be even better.

I have been blissfully happy with it, the SSD boots scary fast and everything opens pretty much instantly. The case is not suitable for WOW factor, but I did not care about that. Honestly I cannot think of anything I would change right now.

I have that exact Alienware Aurora R7 liquid cooled. Was too lazy to build my own figured I would give it a try. The case is awesome and sucks, because like said, everything in it makes it not customizable. For me it is one of the fastest machines I have ever used. It is impressive in everyway. Now they are liquid cooled It handles 3-4 instances of gemstone on your first monitor, bitcoin farming on your second video card, VR porn on your headset with an additional xvideos and pornhub on your first video card.

With all those apps running, and all 3 fans running only at 19% for less noise, liquid cooled the CPU is 39c and GPU 1-3 are 47c-48c. They no longer run hot like the R5 and lowers did
