Devil's advocate: GS has always been 'pay2win'... at least, until F2P came out. Unless you go from trial account to trial account, playing teeny lowbies, you would be paying a monthly account-access fee to Simu. Sure, some people pay more (more chars per account, premium, platinum), but everyone paid at least the base monthly fee.
Sure, F2P accounts/characters may seem 'gimped', from a P2W account view... but, in most realities, at least there are F2P options, and you aren't limited to a certain level with F2P characters, and you aren't limited with where you go... if you aren't a power player (which most properly-new people, which is really what F2P is geared toward), the limits that F2P have really shouldn't matter.

As others pointed out, you could for decades spend money to gain power in GS. Simu is just getting a larger cut these days.
What's also true is you can get FAR more out of the game now in terms of gear without spending millions in silver. You can regularly find 5x gear and below at the pawnshop, and if you're patient, you can find 5x padded/weighted gear, or even 6x gear.

The game? People largely set their own winning conditions, but the 'best' gear is increasingly found only at paid events... whether that be a 10x sword of doom or a fancy RP prop.

But you cant win the game. Unless you morph into David Whatley. He is the only winner.
