No, I specifically mean the type of Welfare people get when they drop off unemployment. I'm not against Unemployment, because you pay into that. I don't generally have a problem with disability payments, whether military or not. I have seen some people game the fuck out of the VA, but that is another matter.
Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam
Yeah, disability, while technically a form of welfare, is definitely not in the same league. That applies to any industry as far as I'm concerned. Food stamps, heating assistance, welfare checks, those are a whole other animal.
I've got no problem with any of those things, but the last three are treating the symptom rather than the disease. Like locking prisoners up without rehabilitation. It just prolongs or exacerbates the issue. Welfare should be more like a stepping stone. All they really do at current is make you pinkie swear that you're looking for jobs and jump through a lot of bureaucratic hoops.
There are plenty of industries that could benefit from a subsidized labor force. Working for welfare keeps everyone productive, keeps a goal in mind of routine, pay, and gives a reason for those disinclined to move upwards to something that pays better or requires less effort.
Edit to add: Maybe even trade apprenticeship would be beneficial, for those without really marketable skills. The world definitely needs electricians, locksmiths, carpenters, et cetera, but it takes some training that might not otherwise be available to those seeking welfare.
