Is it possible we're conflating air and void flares? Because those indeed look like greater air flares, but are different from the messaging for greater void (which I have on a runestaff, and it's wildly good).

Strange trolls get double damage on the script steam but not on the base steam

The script flare is always a double flare. With greater fire flares against trolls, you basically get a quadruple flare when the script flare fires.
