In addition to other uses (swinging, CoL, clerics, etc): tip 1

Hold it in hand before entering the sphere to the Rift. Stow it when landing and you'll never suffer penalties from spirit loss. For example, you have 10 max spirit, 11 with the star, it normally can drain up to 3 from you which is 8, put it away and max is back to 10, 8/10 is good.
