Lightbulb Military Getting Rid of Foreigners

It's been a sore point for Republicans for a long time.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The Associated Press has learned that the U.S. Army has moved in recent weeks to discharge immigrant recruits and reservists who enlisted through a program that promised them a path to citizenship.

President George W. Bush ordered "expedited naturalization" for immigrant soldiers in 2002 in an effort to swell military ranks. Seven years later, the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program, known as MAVNI, became an official recruiting program.

The program came under fire from conservatives when President Barack Obama added DACA recipients — young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally — to the list of eligible enlistees. In response, the military layered on additional security clearances for recruits to pass before heading to boot camp.

Donald Trump's administration added even more hurdles, creating a backlog within the Defense Department. Last fall, hundreds of recruits still in the enlistment process had their contracts canceled. A few months later, the military suspended MAVNI.

There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.

This has already been debunked as highly misleading. They are discharging "immigrant recruits" who have failed their background checks. You know, like they would go ahead and discharge "American citizen recruits" if they failed background checks too.

Ya the MAVNI recruits are tough to screen for background checks. They're kind of fucked too because they can't work while waiting for their induction and their visa status changed when they entered the program. Sounds like regular peacetime military stuff instead of a coordinated effort to shit can foreigners

I'm honestly shocked. There might be hope for you yet, cwolff.

If you are saying that the military has not stopped the program, then you are mistaken. They ended it last year. This year, they're getting rid of the people who enrolled prior to suspension of the program.

That haven't gone through boot or basic yet. You really aren't in until you show up there. Delayed enlistment can be terminated at any time for any reason.

    Trump is keeping his promises.

Over the course of 12 months, the U.S. Army discharged more than 500 immigrant enlistees who were recruited across the globe for their language or medical skills and promised a fast track to citizenship in exchange for their service, The Associated Press has found.

The decade-old Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest recruiting program was put on hold in 2016 amid concerns that immigrant recruits were not being screened sufficiently. The Army began booting out those enlistees last year without explanation .

Wow, a President ended a program from a prior administration. How amazing.
