They also recently threw someone in prison for recording Muslim defendants accused of raping children as they were walking into the court house.

Well, look at what liberalism is. A view holding strongly for liberty and equality. Liberty being key. That is a big thing here in the US. So yeah, the Republican party falls liberal compared to a lot of the more authoritative parties of the world. Just because a state has socialist programs, doesn't mean they are necessary to the left either. It depends on how they are implemented, how they control they citizen's lives, etc.
