I know it can dispel the target if you use headbutt. Not sure about defensively.
It will take away your mana though.

I had the greathelm for a while before I got the full plate. I never saw the helm absorb a spell cast at me, but it did dispell flare on headbutt and reactivity when struck in the head/neck/eyes. And yeah, full mana burn, 0/0

I use on my CoL warrior and it doesn't really effect him much, the signs last more than long enough. I just removed it directly after a hunt and put it on after using signs before a hunt. Takes a little management but it stripped spells pretty regularly so it was worth it for me.
