They shouldn't just expect us to protect them. Do you know why our defense budget is what it is? Because we're the world police. And it shouldn't be that way. I consider myself fiscally conservative, and I don't agree at all with the amount we spend on military. The EU either needs to pay us for what we do (i.e. "just protect them") or get off their asses and up their defense spending as well.

The funny thing is, for all the talk about socialized healthcare and how well it does in other countries in the EU. Let's see how that works out for them now that they may have to carry their weight when it comes to military spending.

We're part of that equation. It's been good for us. We maintain peace, we get the head chair at the global table and we (whenever possible) interject stability to allow our businesses to do business.

Their expectations were set by the USA. Now we're breaking the deal with the too. We're breaking lots of deals right now and the result will be rapid militarization globally. Europe will have to ramp up it's military, Japan will too and the Saudi's want in on the game. Trump would like to stand back and sell everyone guns which will be good for us short term and probably a disaster long term.

BTW: It seems our new ambassador to Germany may not do such a bang up job of fixing this relationship

The New York Times is out with a new profile of the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody, a figure who like so many others has risen to prominence in the Trump era by offering a softer touch when covering the administration. That softer touch, naturally, earns him detractors who accuse him of access journalism and only pitching softballs at the president.
Brody's response to that criticism is telling:

“The media’s version of tough questions and my version of tough questions are different, based on the audience we serve,” he said. “Our audience isn’t going to want me to really ask about Russia or Stormy Daniels. They are just not going to want me to ask.”
