Syria has a lot of modern anti-air weaponry due to both the Russians giving it to them and capturing stuff we've given their opponents. Filling the air up with flak is also a great way to shoot down anything.
The F-16 is still a great plane, hell, we still use it. And Israel has one of the best tanks on the planet.
