Thread: Random Alteration Ideas

  1. Default Random Alteration Ideas

I get a lot of random items made and have some folks who have inquired about idea help. I just started a new position at work and am going back to school in the fall, so I am not sure how much time I'll have to go run around and get alterations, but I still keep coming up with random ideas from time to time. I figured I might just start posting them here and if people want to use them or a modified version of them, to feel free. Though I'd like to know if/when someone does and what the final description looks like. These ideas might be for specific item types, partial ideas, fully formed, whatever.

a single silk-draped pauldron fashioned from black gold-framed stained glass

A pair of skull-impaled pauldrons - A pair of blackened pauldrons have been fashioned from crude iron, the metal irregular in places indicating slipshod craftsmanship. A number of spikes stud the pauldrons with a single larger spike pointing directly up from each pauldron. Impaled on the two larger spikes are a pair of humanoid skulls, the yellowing bone and scraps of skin suggesting they were left to rot over time.

a silver boney claw-like handflower - Segmented links, each comprised of a highly detailed silver bone, are joined together to fashion a humanoid skeleton hand. Designed to overlay over the wearer's own hand, the handflower clasps around the wrist, branching out to cover each knuckle and extend down to the tip of each finger, displaying a silver version of the bones below. Each bone length is held in place by a ring segment... something something

    2-sided cloak idea:
a deeply hooded pristine white cloak emblazoned with a golden crown across the back
a deeply hooded tattooed leather cloak lined in iridescent serpent skin

Pin worn scented item - eye.. An alabaster slit-pupiled eye
A sanguine slit-pupiled despanal eye haloed in rune-scribed silver - brimstone?
An alabaster slit-pupiled eye - The eye is haloed in polished silver, the metal has been scribed with a multitude of glyphs and sigils. Crafted from pale white alabaster, the gem is threaded with irregular sanguine-hued despanal. The spherical alabaster has been carved to resemble a slit-pupiled eye, the pupil centered over a particular vein of despanal lending stark contrast. A single despanal point marrs the corner of the eye, resembling nothing so much as a single bloody teardrop. - scent - causing it to release the sharp, coppery tang of fresh blood.

    Scented Items:
a pair of half-eaten tart earrings fashioned from lumpy jelly opals – scent of sugar and fruit?

a bloodstained iron manacle trailing a broken chain - the rank scent of blood and sweat

a threadbare cloth cloak raggedly patched with assorted colorful materials - smell - rum and ammonia/cat pee

a five-petaled spotted corpse flower the exact hue of bruised flesh - rotting meat

A silver-set shadowglass collar - Crafted from broken shards of shadowglass, shades of grey billow across the smooth surface of each shard, smudges of ebon visible along the fractured edges. Each shard is linked together upon a short length of tarnished silver which culminates into a single larger section that serves as the lock-enclosed clasp.

A murky grey shadowglass collar bound in silver
a tarnished silver collar spiked in shadowglass shards

A featureless coraesine mask – Hammered into a single smooth plane of coraesine, the mask is without ornamentation or features. The natural misty white hue of the metal is swirled across the surface with veins of dark grey. Viewed from the correct angle, the grey swirls in mask resolve into the vague impression of a face, either laughing or crying depending on the perspective.

a sextet of coraesine wings - Coraesine has been worked and forged, through some unknown/occult means, and fashioned into a set of six wings. The grey-shot white metal extends out from a central point into six distinct wings, each with finely articulated feathers. The coraesine feathers are a pure white with darker grey shafts affixing them to the rest of the wing.

some silver-caged black diamond cufflinks - Crafted from oxidized silver, the cufflinks each nestle a single faceted black diamond. As caliginous as a starless sky, the countless faces of the diamonds sparkle with an unearthly blue fire. The dark beauty of the diamond is exquisite, like black star plucked from the heavens.
a pair of purple black thunderhead opal cufflinks - Caged and backed in sterling silver are nestled two thumb-sized purple black thunderhead opals. The velvety ebon surface of the gemstone orbs are veiled with clouds of intense, bruised purple. some silver-caged shadowglass cufflinks - Caged and backed in oxidized silver, each cufflink grasp a single fragment of shadowglass. The shadowglass has a smoky color remniscent of fog at dusk or dawn. The still sharp edges of the shadowglass fragment are limned with ebon, almost as though the gemstone was bleeding darkness.

    Music Stand Design:
a four-legged music stand, which he is holding in his right hand. Crafted from thin, lightweight metal, the contraption appears to have once been a normal music stand. The formerly flat face, once built for holding sheet music, has been warped and bent to resemble a canine head. The stand has been twisted and shaped to resemble a body with a tail. Set within the body, held by wiring, are broken pieces of various instruments, a mockery of organs. Loosely covering the body and tail of the stand are tattered remains of sheet music, creating the odd semblance of fur.

an iron-bound despanal box - Overlayed in glossy scarlet despanal, the box is masterfully fitted to appear crafted entirely from the gemstone. Black and purple veins thread the gemstone, creating a rioting swirl of color. Worked into the form of a heart, the colored veins emphasize the imagery of a bloody heart. Wrapped around the box are black iron bands, reinforcing and binding the box together, presenting the image of a bound heart. an iron-toothed despanal key...

    a crude black ora katana
a crude black ora katana - Crudely forged black ora, the blade lacks the usual elegant lines of the traditional erithian weapon, appearing as though crafted in mocking imitation. The blade is thicker and barely curved, thickening just above the tsuba and scribed with almost illegible calligraphy. The tsuba, larger to match the blade, is crafted from matching black ora, etched with the outline of an aishan, it's eyes fitted with tiny soulstones. - Read: Honor Scorned

    Vatanura – provide golvern
a folded ebon silk sash knotted at the hip - A folded ebon silk sash knotted at the hip, made in classic erithi style, is masterfully folded to reveal a repeating pattern in the fine silk. The vatanura winds securely around two scabbards that are designed to rest off the left hip. The first, a golvern-throated ebonwood scabbard, is set slightly forward and lower than the second, a golvern-inlaid ebonwood scabbard. Both are angled for a quick draw in combat.

    bellygem glass -
a black-cored purple smoldereye carved into an unblinking eye
a slit pupil-etched violet smoldereyed encasing silvery phosphorescent inclusions

Adding New Ideas and works in progress as they come to mind below:

general idea that came to mind on the drive home yesterday. Not completed, but a broad idea. glaes-faced (something) helmet with a show about the face guard being fashioned from glaes. Additional thoughts included stained glaes or patterned and detailed, to give the impression of the person wearing the helm having facial tattoos.. Like flaming images across the glaes to fit an overall flame motif for the rest of the helm, or something like that.

a long tunic-style dress with a show about the dress being similar to a tunic, as it is composed of a long panel along the front and the back and lacking in sides, with assorted belts and straps holding the sides in place for some small degree of decorum.

a gown made entirely from lengths of silver chain.. at least the skirty bits.

Really vague atm, just had the idea, but a runestaff crafted from crystal. Like. Maybe a (wood it's made from)-sheathed staff with a show about the core being formed from a crystalline growth, maybe erupting out of the wood or bound in strips of wood..

I also keep wanting to make something organic looking that isn't organic. Like a molded vultite breastplate with a show about the oddly curved and shaped metal armor with a seemingly wet sheen to it, the irregular hues threading the piece adding together to give the whole an organic look to it.. Maybe something chitinus or made from selshis.

a twining lace armband(could use some work) - with a show about a simple silver armband trailing loosely twining lace that extends from said armband to a matching silver bracelet, creating a sort of sleeve.. random anime stuff. I dunno, something to work on.

I keep thinking of trying to design something reminiscent of the daedric gear in skyrim/oblivion and specifically include a bit about a barbed grip and maybe name that infernal covenant..

Japhrimel takes his black branding iron and jabs the superheated metal into your open wound. You let out a scream as the hot iron sizzles against your flesh, which begins to smoke and burn. The sensation sets your nerves aflame with blinding white agony, but somehow you manage to retain consciousness through the excruciating procedure. At last, the wound is blackened and sealed, but the pain is slow to recede.

...unfortunately, your heart gives out a moment later.

I approve very much of this thread.

a Luukosian forked dagger -- Forged from rolaren dyed an emerald green color, the weapon resembles a pair of twisted serpents. The pommel is meticulously crafted into a pair of serpent heads, with tiny faceted rubies set as eyes. Two long, intertwined bodies slink sinuously from the scaled hilt, the tips of their tails forming a pair of deadly spikes.

a frilly white cravat pinned with a silver seal,
a gleaming silver-backed diamond and sapphire peacock pin,
a crushed dark teal velvet coat edged in elaborate silver embroidery
a pair of pristine white silk gloves,
some closely-cropped fine silken breeches, and
a pair of low-heeled grey velvet shoes.

    a misty-twined dark silver amulet,
a regal heavy blue velvet longcoat swept with tufts of opaline white feathers along the neck and shoulders,
an open-necked deep blue silk shirt buttoned with silver-rimmed pale opals,
    a silver-swept thick signet ring,
a soft black belt of sueded leather,
a pair of dark blue velvet pants swept with brightly sheened windswept patterns, and
a pair of deep blue boots capped with a brilliant gleaming mesh of twining silver patterns.

a gown made entirely from lengths of silver chain.. at least the skirty bits.

Ysharra has: a radiant mithril mesh gown wrought over a sleek sheath of flawless smoke grey spidersilk.

It's one of my favorite things that she's collected over the years and it's also a compromise from Sooki, who added the sheath part as that was not part of the original, hahah.

I'm sure something akin to this has been done before, but I'm starting to run low on needs, and when looking through my stuff I found a velvet-lined scarlet glaes bodice, and thought, hey, kind of nifty, maybe I could make one that's a little more Ysharra's grey/silver/mithril scheme. The problem with bodices is that you get stuck with the same sort of themes, so the thought of making one that's a pseudo breastplate out of metal and maybe some glass/glaes sounds promising. I'll have to work on it.

The other thing I've got floating around in my head is the next installation in my environmental threats theme, as Japhrimel knows about, the first I have due to his help and generosity:

    a dark-tinted specimen jar:
In the smoky glass, amphibian bodies are preserved in a thick, frothy mixture of alcohol and saltpeter. The tiny tree frogs are glossy black, though they hold more than death in common, as each has a layer of fungal mucus across all or part of their skins. One is so riddled with the white, ropey infection that his legs are twisted into an unnatural position, another has its head coated in the invading organism. All have been dissected, the necropsies showing the parasitic invasion into the soft tissue.

That's my take on the real world's problem with frogs due to global warming and overpopulated centers close to wetlands, the frogs are living in water with higher temperatures due to climate change and higher levels of waste in them, and thus they are much more vulnerable to fungal infections. I figure that Wehnimer's, being a human settlement, has obviously grown in size since its founding so it's not too far-fetched to think their frogs are also experiencing the same problem.

My next thing to tackle is a flowering plant, specifically hemlock. Currently hemlock is not forage-able in the game, though I have a few packets of it I've picked up at merchants, as well as an altered bouquet of it. Hemlock of course is very poisonous, and can be invasive, but in its own environment it performs a number of important functions, like population control of herbivores. Also, some ground fowl and other birds become immune to it and nest in it, and thus are avoided by predators as they carry enough of the toxin in their systems that eating them proves fatal.

Currently one of the hemlock trees in the southeastern United States is being eradicated by a blight, the white wooly adelgid. It's destroyed tens of thousands of hemlocks, and manifests as a series of white lines on the needles and little white puffs on the twigs. The blight is the result of introducing a Japanese hemlock into the region that carried the blight but had developed a resistance to it that the native species does not have.

So, being that Ysharra is fond of poisons and keeping track of problems with the local flora and fauna, I thought I'd make up something similar, and since hemlock isn't much of a presence it wouldn't affect anything mechanically, it's just for RP. Do you think a merchant who works on flowers/plants (like the upcoming Midsummer) would be willing to alter a fluff herb into a hemlock twig with a show for the blight? I'll work on drafting one, but would love to get folks' opinions and thoughts.

Also, if you all can think of any other additions to the series- I was thinking of perhaps a nested egg case with a collection of eggs afflicted with soft shells or other problems, or a cantilever wooden case holding a series of insects with various stress symptoms, butterfly caterpillars being eaten by fly maggots, honeybees with mites, and so on.

    Thanks for reading

    -GK!

Going to keep editing and adding things as they come to mind. If anyone wants a few ideas for specific items, let me know. Had a neat mask idea come up recently.

With a firm grasp, you tug on the edge of your leather greatcloak, and a pair of bloodspattered organza wings stretched across a sinew-linked bone framework unfolds from the back of the garment. Small frosted icicles begin to form along their tips.

    You're the man.

Every since I first saw Bergraham at work, I think it was the winter fest in icemule in.. 07? I really like naming weapons. A good amount of my weapons have come about following having come up with a name. You ever want some awesome names for things, I suggest reading Simon R. Green. Good freaking lord does that man get repetitive, but he comes up with THE BEST names of stuff. I'll throw random names and words I want to use in names on here, because why not.

a glaes-covered meteorite shard - Shorter than an inch in length, the meteorite shard displays a complex melange of materials. Clearly visible stone is threaded with iron-nickel traces, coated on one side with an odd glaes coating. The glaes side of the shard is pitted as though from numerous impacts, with sharply sheared edges indicating the shard was once part of a much greater whole.

Random script idea. Signet-sized rings with a thumb pint-sized face, scribed with glyphs or sigils or runes and a short needle in the center. Enhances some lore or another and has a small negative to health regeneration or flat health. Zest about wearing it and pricking your finger, zest about testing the needle.. Look at it to tell current level of blood filling the glyph-shaped runnels. Etc. And able to refill enhancive via sacrificing blood.

I was thinking of finding an enhancive Mage rechargeable ring, altering it and Ezscripting it,but it wouldn't be as versatile
