Sometimes when I try to cast open 717 (with 707 active), I get this message:

You are unable to create a magical link with the eye.


Anyone know what that's all about?

Are you in the same room as the eye? I've never had that problem

Some rooms are set to block the magic. I highlight the room description so I know when I'm in one. Are you on Mount Aenatumgana?

Is it in an area where familiars are not allowed? My recollection is that in some such areas, you can cast 707 but cannot move the eye from room to room, and in those areas you cannot cast 717 through a floating eye.

I seem to recall it happening in other spots too, but I think recently it's happened to me mostly along the Icemule Trail. I know it happens on the tree path, for sure. Maybe there's some weird edge-of-realm mechanics going on there, or maybe it's just blocked to keep sorcs from killing hapless passersby. Seems like 635/1030 work in those spots though, don't they? I guess I probably shouldn't be casting open 717 on the trail anyhow.
