I'll chime in, without science! 312 is an amazing spell, but is very mana intensive without the proper pool. If you ward a 312, then you're f'd, because you not only lose the mana, you lose the time spent to cast. Remember, 312 is HEAVILY influenced by your stance/hands/time setting. You can change the spell prep time. It doesn't have to always be 3 and 3, it can be 5 and 3, or 6 and 3...the higher the wait, the higher the damage cycle. I'm curious where the sweet spot would be.
