Hrmm, it depends on what you're going for? Beaches, history, just general travel? I might be inclined to ask the State Dept. which countries are safest first. I've heard some questionable things about Brasil. Argentina would be my next thought but I don't know how things are there, either. I might be inclined to suggest Lima, Peru. Could do the whole Andes/Aztec/Incans thing. I don't really know much about SA except what I hear on the news or see in the papers. No doubt someone else would know a lot more.
