Character rename ceremony: Chivalrous becomes Ascelon. Thurs 9pm

Come out for the official renaming ceremony where Chivalrous will be renamed to Ascelon. There will be a scribe on hand to record it and I will be giving away all my nice items (ok, that's a lie). Hearthstone Courtyard, Landing. Thursday, April 5th 9pm eastern.



Questions:

Will Chivalrous be around anymore?
No, this is an official rename, you won't see Chivalrous in game anymore and Ascelon will become him.


Are they separate characters?
No, the character is the same, same history, race, profession, age, level, friends, back story, achievements, etc. The only thing that has changed is the marker that shows up in the front-end when the character walks in the room.


Isn't his "real name" Olivier, why didn't he become that?
Yes, but Olivier wasn't open. His full name is Olivier Ascelon Grayhaven. Call him what you want, you can still call him Chivalrous if you like.

Let me guess ... beyond the fact that you've been writing them a letter once a week, shawshank redemption style, they're making you pay the price of either a permadeath restoration or of a premium wedding.

One way or another are they collecting some extra money from you for this service? Instead of respecting your role playing, contribution to the community, figurehead status and years and years of dumping cash into their wallets.

I'm surprised renames aren't a paid service yet. I know there are plenty of shitty named capped/bought/both characters that people would happily pay to rename.

$250 would be worth it to some people.

Honestly I hope this doesn't set a precedent. Why? Because it'll be too damn confusing! "Who's that, I've never heard of him?" "Oh, well that's the guy who used to be Chivalrous, but now he's called Ascelon." "Oh, what about that guy?" "Remember so-and-so? Well he changed his name to..."

Pain. In The. Ass.

Now, if it's just Chiv, I'm ok with it, cause I can remember one. But beyond that, how the hell am I supposed to remember who's who?

That said, if you've been trying for years to not be an adjective and you've finally succeeded, congratulations.

The truth is a lot simpler than that, but I'll leave it to Drew to reveal.

I think it's pretty lame. You should have to reroll to rename a char, like like everyone else.

Yeah, not to sound like a dick but there are a shitload of people who would love this option and I've been told multiple times by GMs this isn't something they ever offer.

Hell, I've got a whole stable of fucking characters I'd love to rename. Might've been a bad idea to let this cat out of the bag, now everyone (including myself) will want to know how they can get in on the sweet name changing bandwagon.

Who the fuck is Chivalrous?

This sets one hell of a precedent, considering how vehemently staff have insisted - forever - that this would not be done.

Far simpler explanation: he's handwaving and it's really a separate character that he's stealth-played up until now, and the actual Chivalrous character will be gone, replaced with this new one.

It expects others to go along with it. Possibly a tall order, but not impossible.

I wrote a letter to feedback a while back proposing some sort of in-game witness protection service. Something that would let you re-do your character's appearance and name, while forcing you to keep race, culture, and everything else, for a RL fee. The only catch would be that the in-game "service providers" would be a rather shady lot, and would take a finger as part of the payment. That way anyone could tell at a glance that the person had partaken of the service, and how many times.

Needless to say, I never heard anything back.

They would have to add an Also Known As field, which likely wouldn't be hard to do in one's profile.

Funny, no one cares that I can take Showal into Shattered and then into Prime as often as I want. I would think that'd have gotten at least one complaint but it hasn't yet.

Pft, I transfer my characters in and out of MO. Sometimes they let me bring back a gun, but only with 6 bullets.

Well really, he said Ascelon is the same level as Chivalrous, so he wouldn't have had to get the character to 100, because Chivalrous is not capped.

I'm confused. So when you walk into the room it will say "Ascelon just arrived" but if someone LOOKs in the room it will still list you as "Chivalrous"?

I think it's bullshit. I used to ask them again and again to change a characters name I'd spent 0 - cap regretting.
In the end I sold it since it nagged at me for so long.
I also sold a capped rogue I bought and had a lot of fun with because his name sounded like a gangster G and I couldn't get past it.

And the way it's all hush hush so I'll probably never know the difference between how you got it and my pleas for over 7 years were ignored, makes this bullshit.

Don't care enough for that. While I am there hidden sometimes, that is largely because it was a good room to go into hiding at the end of a movement script I use. Ascelon was there like 17x a day so I happened to notice it. I forgot who your character was, but I used to notice you there a lot too! Where ya been? I'm broke....
