Calm down, poppa.
He loves it when you call him big poppa.
Anticor is not going to give you a laptop.
That's a pretty bad analogy, but I think it's a crock of shit that people are able to sue the tobacco companies. Warning labels or no, they chose to do something and they got what they got from it. Also, the smoker was not impacted by Camel Joe being taken off of billboards.
I think it's a pretty big reach thinking that many of these players came from 'hoods where their life expectancy is far below the average. Sure, a lot of them may have come from some bad places, but don't blow things out of proportion.Quote:
I don't know. Two things though: as you say don't think it isn't about the money. How many professional football players grew up in neighborhoods where early violent death was common? From that perspective, getting millions of dollars in exchange for the violent death you expected anyway might still seem like a good deal.
Risk/reward. They decided their playing football is worth the risk their bodies and minds face in order to make the money they make, have 'the spotlight' and a chance at some sort of fame, and/or because they love the game. Don't we all want to get paid to do things we love to do? As to the motorcycle thing, you bet your ass I'd take $10M to ride a bike around. What I wouldn't do, though, is turn around and sue the person/company that offered that money to me, which I happily took, if something goes bad claiming I had no idea it could happen to me or that they should have done something to prevent it or lessen the pain and suffering I was dealt. That's just not how you're supposed to do things.Quote:
Second, these are football players we're talking about, they live in a cartoonishly macho environment. Publicly admitting their concerns about health has always been a major taboo.
Is it primarily an issue of personal responsibility, though? Suppose someone offered you ten million dollars to drive around on said motorcycle without a helmet, further suppose you had no reasonable expectation of making that much money through conventional means, and finally suppose that you grew up in poverty and would very much like your children to have a better life. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me that we (society) should not tolerate the offerer, even though he or she would certainly find takers.
Well that was a buzz kill.
