I'm having a real hard time understanding this call to abolish the police movement. I understand that police reform has tried to happen before and it never seems to work they want it to.. It does feel like the time is right to make a sweeping change to policing in the US. But to think you can get rid of police and start over is just as naive as thinking we could just snap our fingers and have universal health care.
I agree police culture needs to change. I think the best way to go about that is increased spending on police training, oversight, accountability, and a distancing of government prosecutors and police.
Just like health care needs to have a public option.
These 2 systems are like mammoth ocean liners. You can't just sink them and wait for our dysfunctional government to figure out how to build a new boat while we all drown. You turn the wheel hard and wait for the boat to start turning in the right direction.
I'm not sure if these far left activists are so obtuse to think that this is a good idea.. or like a person starting a negotiation, this is just an opening bid. It's probably more the later unfortunately. I worry the the media will blow this viewpoint up to make it seem like all democrats think its a good idea, scaring swing voters already on the fence with Biden away entirely. The same way 2nd amendment discussion makes swing voters run from the democratic party.
