Don't think you could argue that the gauge itself is being turned up. Rotational knobs (you're a rotational knob), can be referenced as turning up/down, usually clockwise = up, unless the markings are on the right side. ... or possibly if you have a bottle cap and you're opening it, you would turn it counter-clockwise to turn it up (unless you were holding the bottle upside down I guess... wait would that change the counter-clockwisness of it?).

The question is, if you turn that gauge up, are you turning the AC up? Or are they inverse? I think the rule as established by the holy internet (and ordained by the might magic eight ball) would be if AC = Air Conditioner or Air Conditioning.
