I was the same way as a kid. My mother told me that if I'd just suck it up now, later in life I would be powerful enough to have more freedom. That advice might have worked if I weren't living in the same house as she was, watching her pull thirteen hour days in the office, plus off-hour conference calls at home in the middle of the night to places on the other side of the world. On vacations, she'd be hooked to her laptop and phone for at least part of every day and night.
All I'm saying is, be better than my mom at hiding how much worse a post-graduate degree career can be than school.
