How the heck do you pull something in your neck while doing a pullup???

Well as you can see...I'm not sure.
If you hyperextend your neck while straining to do the pullup, I think that would be a pretty easy way to do it. Plus, "neck" could include not only the upper neck but also lower neck extending into the shoulder/lat area, which are areas clearly implicated in the movement.
Bingo, probably on both points. The fact that I could barely pull myself halfway meant that I was straining to try to get up there, so I likely did twist and pull in some wrong directions trying to make it. And when I say "neck trouble" it's really a shorter way of saying "the entire area from the base of my skull down to about mid back, from one side all the way across to the other." Any or all of those muscles being worked in a way that my body doesn't like can screw me up. It's pretty annoying, because stuff I can do without trouble today could lay me out tomorrow. There's very little logic at work there.
Here is what you need to do, once you have recuperated. Get yourself a chair and put it under the pullup bar. Instead of starting out by hanging down and pulling yourself up stand on the chair and start in the already up position and just hold yourself there for as long as possible. When you can't do that any longer lower yourself down as slow as possible. This will help you build up muscles needed to do regular pullups.
