MRIs are really expensive while xrays are dirt cheap. They're also far less invasive. I got an X ray first and there is still a lot of valuable information to be learned from them. The MRI would have sucked if I found out later that they could have learned it with an xray. I needed 12ccs of contrast injected into my shoulder and then I had to lay still for 45 minutes in the mri tube. But yeah, I hope you don't need surgery either, and unless you're really active in probably wouldn't get it done at your age. And I don't mean that to be a dick, but shoulders take about a year to heal. Unless you are really active and need that shoulder at 100%, it's not worth the long recovery process.

Yea, doctor was saying the same thing about surgery. Unfortunately, I am pretty active and would hate for my shoulder to feel like it has been feeling for the past couple of weeks for the rest of my life. The shot in my shoulder worked wonders though.. I'm actually able to move it around almost like normal. He said to just stop using it for a week and we'll see where we are at... so I'll just hope this repairs itself.

It could. It could just be inflammation of the rotator cuff. My injury happened 9 months ago and I have been working with it. I'm not in a considerable amount of pain but not having a shoulder at 100% makes me scared for climbing mainly. Truthfully, if I didn't do all the shit that I do, I wouldn't get the surgery. I have built up a great deal of flexibility and strength in that shoulder regardless. I'm able to do a lot of stuff. That pain will go down that your feeling. And you'll have to work with it, but I'm not really held back with 95% of the stuff I do.

Yeah, this is generally true. I've had two knee surgeries on the same knee, and recently had another unfortunate fall on the same knee where I ended up back in my orthopedist's office. They did an x-ray first, reviewed it, and then, because there were additional bone spurs and obvious arthritis, they ended up doing another MRI. On the one hand I was peeved because I knew that I was going to need an MRI due to the two prior surgeries and the fact that it's all soft-tissue damage, which doesn't show up well on an x-ray. So I thought they shouldn't have wasted the money on obtaining an x-ray and gone right to the MRI. On the other hand, it's part of the attempt to keep the cost of healthcare down, so I couldn't complain too much. And ultimately having the x-rays is beneficial because they take them of both knees so they have a baseline of what that knee would look like if it was healthy and didn't have degenerative, traumatic changes.

And Showal's right about the shoulder surgery, too. Not everyone needs it. Plenty of people walk around with partial rotator cuff tears with no problems and no pain, or very little. Surgery is always going to be painful and necessitate a longer recovery, and might not help at all.
