I don't think I've ever quit a job I had no real beef with. I feel a bit awkward about it and I'm not sure how to broach the subject with my boss. I've known her for half a decade. She trained me. I like her and I like my co-workers and I like the job. It's just that there's the same job in another, more ideally located place where I get to be in charge and I'll make 10% more money.
Tell her the same way you just told us.
I spent all day catching up on a tv show and at the end realized there was no more left and my life is not half as exciting.
Four year old. Six hours of sleep. Eight a.m. doctors appointment. First day back at work after my vacation, none of which ended up being spent vacationing. Tired, baby. Tired.
Four days ago we went to the mechanic to pick up my wife's van. The brakes had gone out on it (ALL the way out... my daughter had driven it around with the emergency brake on, to the point where it had LOST a caliper), and we'd managed to scrape together the money to get that fixed. My wife and I piled into my truck (I adore my truck... insert typical male stereotype here) and headed in to pick up the van. 3 miles from the mechanic, the transmission starts to slip on my truck. (Insert LOTS of bad words here). The transmission was just replaced in the truck three months ago. I leave the truck with the mechanic for an assessment, and we take the van home.
Get a call yesterday. Bad transmission. I start to research the warranty process for the place from which I purchased the transmission. They were supposed to send a form to the mechanic to certify that the transmission was installed by a certified professional, for warranty purposes. That apparently hadn't happened. Come to find out, they sent the wrong form to my Dad (he assisted with the cost of the transmission), who filed it away and didn't think twice about it because nowhere on the form did it mention A) my name, B) my vehicle, C) anything about a transmission. It was talking about a radiator, and how it was important to install shock absorbers to prevent corrosion.
Now I get to attempt to leverage this place into picking up the old (bad) transmission, sending me a new one, and ideally paying for the shipping as well. Initial returns have NOT been promising.

Any chance they'd counter with more money or benefits to keep you? I think the main thing to do is to be honest with your boss. Tell her you love the job and you enjoy working for her. I think any person is going to recognize that a vertical move leading to a 10% increase in wage is worth leaving for and, who knows, maybe they'd cough up a 15% raise to try and keep you.Quote:

I honestly don't think you have too much to worry about. Idiots piss you off, and you like this woman enough to go drinking with her - ergo, she is not an idiot. She may be upset initially at losing you, but she'll understand.
You realize that pretty much all workplaces say the budget is tight, we don't have the money in our department, etc. because this keeps certain people (read: women) from asking for raises. You should do your bit for gender equality and ask for the raise. You might be surprised how forthcoming they are with more money. It's certainly not rude or offensive to ask, it's business. If they say no, you still have the new job, hooray.Quote:
