Well, in the US maybe. Canada is a different place. It was also before 9/11 and when most people even thought about Muslims outside of the intelligence community.

Quebec is pretty behind on race relations. It wasn't that long ago (within the past 5-6 years maybe) that some Montreal Canadiens fans wore blackface and afro wigs in what they appeared to think was support of PK Subban, who played there at the time. A lot of MTL fans were completely surprised when people said that was racist.
It is pretty wild how many politicians in general are being found to have blackface photos. I've made it to 37 years old and it's never once occurred to me that 'Hey, maybe I should cover my face in shoe polish, that would be hilarious'. Like it isn't hard not to do this, lol
It's still (and will always be) the 70's in the UK
