Lee actually didn't want slavery - he actually didn't even want to succeed from the Union, however, loyalty to a persons state was almost (possibly more so) as important as loyalty to country back then. He fought for the south because Virginia fought for the south, not because he wanted slavery to continue.
We can argue the merits of that decision, or his privilege, however, to lump him in with people who are actually racist is a stretch.
