NYC Mayor DeBlasio is announcing that they will be offering free healthcare to all. He estimates there are 600,000 people that will take advantage of this program and be estimates they will spend 100 million.
Someone help me out here.. how are they providing healthcare for that many people and only spending about $170 a year??
I honestly hope it works out for New York City.. if it does, we should roll it out nationwide..

The proposed city-funded health insurance option would assign a primary care doctor to each plan participant and help patients find specialists if needed. De Blasio said the plan, which would be financed out of the city’s public health budget, would ultimately be cost effective by reducing hospital emergency room visits by uninsured patients and by improving public health.
It seems like the goal is to cut down on un-insured people utilizing hospital ERs for routine care. That stuff adds up. If they ran the numbers and this proposal can actually reduce costs then it's honestly pretty smart. Will be interesting to see how it pans out for NYC.Quote:
The city’s public-hospitals corporation, which was running a deficit approaching $1 billion several years ago, has reduced costs and gained revenue through the Affordable Care Act to the point where it is approaching a surplus this year, de Blasio said.
“It involves taking the money we’re spending right now and using it a lot better,” de Blasio said.
Well, yeah. Sick people use their healthcare, lol. Gotta imagine they ran various models on it and it came up more affordable to the city to do it this way than to run an ever increasing public hospital deficit.
I don't know why this is in the facepalm thread. Premature to assume it'll fail, imo.
I wonder of those 600,000 people how many of them will be diagnosed with a chronic illness. How many of them have a chronic illness already that insurance can't/will not/doesn't cover?
