Mentally ill people without guns can't shoot people. But also interesting, if as you claim this mentally ill person walked out of a store with an AR-15 but wasn't mentally ill enough until he was fired? Interesting theory, imagine if the gun wasn't in his hands.

I think it's cute that you think an extended waiting period is going to stop someone from going out to shoot people if they get a gun legally. All the extended waiting period is going to do is:

1) make the person wait longer and plan more or
2) they'll find a way to obtain a gun another way

If you come around to say, but ban guns so it'll stop these killings! Ah...that's also cute that you'd think that.

If someone is set on killing someone else, a gun doesn't need to be used. If they can't get a gun and are still hell bent on killing someone or others, nothing is stopping them from doing such acts with other objects, such as: vehicles, bombs/explosives, knives, baseball bat, golf club, bare hands....a pencil.

If we had a problem with people yelling “FIRE!” in a movie theater or “I have a bomb” in an airport, would your solution be to place a ban on everyone from ever speaking the words fire & bomb?
