I understand why colored people has been bad culturally but it just seems like switching the words around wouldn't help that. Maybe it does, that's why I'm asking. It is essentially saying the same thing.

Because each has been declared so by enough people to whom it applies. Like all words, racial designations are arbitrary. The relevant question in this case is who gets to arbitrate them.

What do you think the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People thinks about calling black people colored people? Do you think they think it's bad?
