I know in the case of Buzzfeed they hadn't made any actual money to keep them in the black since conception. Vice and WaPo I'm not sure of but I'm willing to bet it's simply trimming the fat.
I think they are laying them off because they vastly overestimated how much money they can get with their clickbait headlines.
With Vice, I think they expanded too fast.
