The Tea Party and its Republican supporters basically declared that it was their way or the highway and the reputation of the United States, its economic stability, and the global market be damned. Their intractability showed up Boehner as unable to control his own party, which was assisted by Cantor's apparent desire for Boehner's job.
The Democrats did their best to hold up some vestige of a socially equal vision, but weren't backed fully by the President, who apparently wants to be seen as a fiscal conservative in time for the next election and is more invested in his image than the financial state of the country at the moment.
The entire scenario is a debacle that simply points out how stupidity, self-interest, and political maneuvering can harm the U.S.
There needs to be far less ad hominem party-line gut-rumbling and far more thoughtful commentary and effective policy-making.

And Moody's, on the other hand, seems to give support for the decision to cut spending:

Questions about whether U.S. lawmakers will be able to agree on further budget savings next year lie at the center of the disagreement between the two ratings agencies.
While S&P downgraded the United States to AA-plus after last week's debt deal fell short of its expectations, Moody's is willing to give the government more time tackle its debt problems.
Moody's said the United States "continues to exhibit the characteristics compatible with a Aaa rating" despite the expected further deterioration in the government's debt metrics in the next few years.
"Over time, this status could be threatened if further measures to address the long-term fiscal situation are not adopted, but it is early to conclude that such measures will not be forthcoming," Hess said.
