OR... we can admit that we gave the Native Americans a raw deal and treat them with dignity and respect by not using caricatures or derogatory names for our sports teams. Crazy, I know.

And.... proudly displaying a team worth hundreds of millions of dollars, by dignifying said team with a mascot that represents you, honoring a noble sect of humanity like Indians... that's derogatory?

And for the record, yeah we totally screwed the Indians. But guess what, they got screwed by not being ready to defend their world. You had like 60 tribes spread across the entire fucking country, thinking 'we sit here in the middle of what is now Georgia.... EVERYTHING WITHIN GEORGIA LIMITS IS OURS'.......

Rule of war. Don't take what you can't defend. Had they all banded together, they'd have been able to mount a fairly good defense, considering their knowledge of the terrain and use of nature and all that mystical battle mumbo jumbo.

If we hadn't done it, the USA would have been taken over by Asians. Or Russians. Or the FRENCH, god forbid! Think about it. The world wouldn't have just left these people alone.

A racial slur is not an honorific. Dress it up however you like and it'll still be a racial slur.

But since you ask: yes, the noble savage is a derogatory depiction.
