Debia gained a bonding rank for a creature I killed. I think you simply need to do enough damage to get experience.

Nice work. One other oddity I confirmed years ago is that you don't actually have to swing the weapon to get credit. This was confirmed by bonding to a non-blessable weapon and hunting plane five with voln Fu.

Do you have to hold it in your hand to bond with it?

I'm also doing a lot of fu as I bond to a new weapon... but not sure if I need to hold it or not.

Yes, you need to hold it. You just don't need to swing it.
