ESPN making a poor business decision? Who would have guessed.
I love Zach Lowe and Molly Lambert and Grantland (and many people who quite promptly left Grantland before this announcement), but I suspect this is actually a good business decision by ESPN. Art and business are ever at odds, and I would be not at all surprised to learn that for the wonderful content Grantland created it was hemorrhaging money.
I have also heard from a random source on Twitter that I do not recall that the contracts will be honored, and where possible the talent will be used on other ESPN platforms. Obviously this does not work as well for e.g. Lambert as it does for e.g. Lowe, but it is something.
All in all, it is quite sad to see Grantland go. There were four people whose content I pursued religiously. Two had already left, two more are now left bereft. It is hard out here for a pimp.
