- I do tip at places where it is deemed appropriate, but I just don't understand the whole concept. I think the problem is in having waiters in the first place. So many of these high priced but common restaurants are places I would consider a 'middle ground' place. They aren't cheap food, where you can pick it up at the counter, but they should be. They aren't an actual fancy high priced restaurant the 'rich' would frequent as a status symbol. They are like places people are spending too much money to pretend like they are special, and require people to wait on them. Personally I can put in my own order, I can pick it up, and I can refill my own drink - usually much better than my waiter. Drink refills are the one perk I look forward to, and almost no waiter gets done in a timely manner because they service too many tables, or spend their time in the back instead of the front. Decent restaurant should have specific people doing drinks only. I go spend $100 bucks for a group, I still don't think one person deserves $25 for the service they do. Even if I were rich, I don't see wasting money like that.
So yeah, I see waiters as something that is way too common, isn't a real job. But a service for the rich, or wanna be rich. Servants.
I recall a similar topic like this a long time ago... I am too lazy to look for it though.
