Vigilante justice is revenge.
A foundation of justice is that it is blind (impartial). If you remove the core pillar, you don’t have justice.
Let’s take another example, the George Floyd murder and its aftermath. Some people, as you know, will say that the violent actions of protesters/ rioters are justified. You and I would agree that it is not.
The moment you begin to allow people to take the law into their own hand is the moment you give into mob rule. You want our society to devolve into something resembling The Reign of Terror (post revolutionary France)?
Short video from the film Hateful Eight that explains difference. I say it isn’t real justice because the key element of impartialness is removed, and that makes it vengeance. Great Christmas movie by the way.

I'll go a little further to show I'm not trolling. Justice is simply a "civilized" form of revenge, institutionalized to maintain order. Friedrich Nietzsche, for example, suggested that societal justice emerged from the same instinct as revenge but was tempered by collective interests.
If I smoke a pedophile, I just righted a lot of wrongs.
I despise pedophiles just as much as you do, but let’s explore that.
Excluding self defense (preventing imminent & immediate serious bodily harm), smoking a pedophile would be murder & make you a murderer. Two wrongs don’t make a right. It’s not for you alone to decide a man’s fate or take his life. Civilization has law & order for good reason. I don’t feel like these are hard concepts or explaining why vigilantism is harmful to society is controversial.
A pedophile should stand trial and be severely punished for their crimes. Everyone, including the worst criminals, deserve and have a right to their day in court. I support the death penalty for sexual abuse of a child.
