That diagram is an assumption about an attic space. If you have living space exposed to the inside of the roof, then insulation would need to be ripped out if doing any subsequent work.



I was under the impression Ice Dams occurred typically at the edges of your roof. Sounds like your roofers didn't flash properly around the chimney.

Oh, yeah, you're screwed then. It's still a lack of insulation/lack of airflow concern of course, but there's no cheap way to fix it.

Because of the way our house is set up, we believe that the water is leaking down through the wall cavities into the basement where the leak is. Our chimney (I don't even know if chimney is the proper term for it because we don't have a fire place but that is the best word I have for it) is toward the back of the basement, maybe two-three feet from the external wall and the bilco doors.

Though, my dad brought up the flashing around the chimney as well, it may be part of the problem but you can see the metal flashing around it and the drip is outside. The chimney itself is completely dry except where the puddle has touched it.

... I took a picture of it but I don't actually know how helpful it is. Hang on. I don't know if it helps to understand what is going on, because I'm bad at explaining.

I don't think those protruding nails have anything to do with anything, pretty sure they just hung stuff all around the basement cause there are like half-hammered in nails in weird places.

A picture of your attic would be far better for diagnosing the problem. By the time the water gets to your basement, it could have traveled from anywhere, it's just taking the easiest path to your basement.

You guys pretty much are the only people that see selfies of me. I put one on facebook like, 2 weeks ago, and before that the last photo I put up containing my face was from the world cup. :D You guys are speshul.

I didn't go in the crawl space, my boyfriend did. He didn't take a picture. He is pretty confident that this is the case, because we can't find any other reason. It isn't from either of the bathrooms, we checked, and as far as we can tell none of the pipes have burst, pressure is the same.

Yeah, he isn't small enough to get to the back back part of the space, so he still had to guesstimate but he got to check probably 95% of the space. :|
