Totally unrelated but my 10 year old daughter had a hamster that died over the weekend. Hamsters make terrible pets. I’m sometimes a night owl and can hear that damn hamster wheel spinning from her room. Anyways, she was very distraught and said she misses it like a daughter. I explained animals are not the same as humans when it comes to that, and hamsters have a short lifespan. I tried also being empathetic and we had a little pet burial ceremony in the side yard.

All of this is to say people that say they love their pets (dogs, cats, whatever) like a person just don’t know the difference unless you have children. It’s not their fault…to them it feels like it would be the same because they simply can’t understand until you do. My wife felt like our dog was her baby until we had kids.

I might can agree with this. I was a stepfather for 10 years, I loved my dog, would have been more torn up over losing a step kid. Sad part is, due to the mother, got divorced and lost them anyway. Not like death but yeah, harder than losing my dog.

It's a different kind of love.. but it's still love.

You can't equate it to a love of your child or your wife or your parents, but it's still a deep love.

My wife loves our dogs just below the kids and above strangers. She absolutely treats one of the three as her baby, even with kids.

Yeah I like how PB put it and can agree to that. While it’s not the same as a love for a human, it is something close to it.

Mine treated our dog like her baby, but ever since our daughters were born he took second fiddle & she doesn’t spoil him quite the same. He is 12 years old now, blind with cataracts, and always been kinda dumb as a rescue runt…but he is OUR dumb rescue runt. Besides refusing to poop outside when it’s raining or wet and some other stubbornness, he is a great pet.
