Police in Elizabethtown, KY say they arrested a woman for allegedly harming her pet dog to snag pain pills. Red flags went up after 23-year-old Heather Pereira’s third visit to the animal doctor.
According to the News Enterprise, Pereira cut her 4-year-old retriever named Alice with disposable razor blades so badly the dog needed stitches. Then Pereira reportedly took the animal to the doctor as Alice was bleeding and in pain in hopes of scoring Tramadol, a narcotic-like pain reliever (and she did).
Veterinarian Chad Bailey told the News Enterprise Alice had two serious cuts to her right flank that needed six to eight stitches to close. “Bailey said the frequency of Pereira’s visits and the nature of the wounds made her visit this week suspicious,” News Enterprise said.
During the first visit on Oct. 1, according to reports, Pereira was given Tramadol for cuts. In a second visit to an Elizabethtown clinic, Pereira was given 10 tablets, but she returned three days later and said her child had flushed them down the toilet (Pereira does not have any kids). That’s when the doctor prescribed her 10 more tablets.
Although Elizabethtown Police department Maj. Troy Dye wasn’t specific on how the arrest went down he did say, “We’re confident she was using the painkillers.”
After Pereira was handcuffed and taken in, according to the News Enterprise, she admitted to cutting the dog with her husband’s razors and taking “3 or 4 of the pills.” Pereira is facing three counts of first-offense torture of a cat or dog and three counts of attempt to obtain a controlled substance by making false statements.
As for Alice, the News Enterprise said she is currently at the hospital as she heals.
Bailey said, “She’s doing great. She’s a great dog and is going to be fine. She’ll forgive; that’s what they do.”
