My cat's got the same sort of problem. Been getting worse over the last few years, but now he can't even jump into my lap while I'm at the computer. Used to see him jump from the floor to the top of a 6' fridge. I'm sure it bothers me more than it does him, but it sucks when you can't really do anything for them.

If it were just him not being able to jump into a car then I wouldn't be as concerned but he's started exhibiting some difficulty when defecating. He usually hunches up and has a lot of his weight on his back legs while doing so but, I've noticed that he's been a little unsteady the last few times. If it gets worse and he can't take a shit without falling down then we'll have to have him put down.

Just buy the fun sized ones. Rarely any broken chips, and you never have to reach your hand all the way down the tube.
