John McCain was an American hero. I might not have liked him in the Senate for 30 some years, but I respected his service prior to that.

And then there is voting 5 times to repal Obamacare while Obama was in office and then when Trump had it up to vote, makes a huge production of coming in despite his medical condition to vote no on the repeal and then was said to have said 'Let's see Trump make America great again now.'

If he picked Lieberman or even a non retarded VP candidate things might have been different. Also recall how Bush portrayed him as weak on veterans issues among other things then reconsider the idea that the left thought he was Hitler.
