Maybe it's just me but I get annoyed when I use the chat feature on a website to resolve a business issue and the person on the other end calls me by my first name like we are best buddies.

I don't like that feeling of a false enforced intimacy just because some random stranger I'm doing business with happens to know my first name. Maybe it shouldn't bother me but it does.

That bothers me too. I think you should always call someone you don't know by Mr., Ms., sir, Dr., etc until told to do otherwise. I do this to a fault and have been told by a few patients that I'm too polite. I'd rather be too polite than too casual.

Just got home today and my computer isn't turning on so I'm about to blow a couple thousand on a new asus because i need a computer tonight. On the plus side my iPad just turned asus into sausage....so I have that going for me.

Them using your first name when talking to you is part of their scripted ass kissing so I am not quite sure what your point is. And it seems weird to me too when random people like that use my first name.

Yep. I don't even use my legal first name, so it's even more annoying when they call me by this name that I don't even use, as if that's supposed to make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Another pre-scripted customer service thing that makes me frown is when the cashiers at Kohls absolutely has to tell me that I saved X dollars today, as if that's supposed to make me happy. It takes all my willpower not to ask them "Do I look like some kind of stupid fuck who doesn't understand your shell game of 40-60% off of every single item?!" I don't think you could find a retailer in the world that even sells a single item for 100% of a Kohls price. But I realize the cashiers don't set the stupid policy, so I just twitch and walk away.

Calling you by your first name is part of the whole "make the customer feel like they're your best friend!" and is not the representative deciding to break policy and go rogue to make you personally feel like a regular person and be friendly. I'm sure, however, that whoever develops these policies and scripts would be happy to hear they have the desired effect on you.

I'm actually a very casual guy but how you address someone when first meeting them is one of those pieces of social etiquette that I do agree with. I always immediately correct someone to call me by my first name because I don't want to be called constantly by Mr., but I'd rather say "you can call me ..." then people take the liberty themselves.
