Can always add the rest of the sentence after the "I'm sorry." ... to hear of your loss. A plain old "I'm sorry" just sounds like a trite meaningless phrase to spurt out without thought. If you can use the same phrase to respond to a dead grandmother or a dropped beer, then you can probably do better.

A lot of things we say are trite meaningless phrases we spurt out without thought because it's the polite thing to do. I say "you're welcome" whether someone thanks me for saving their life or thanks me for not kicking them in the head as I walk by. I'm a busy man here, I don't have a lot of time to think up personal messages for every person.

But you do have a point, this is going to be my new standard when I tell someone I'm sorry.
