If you're not aware, transfats were introduced into prepackaged foods as an alternative to saturated fats--the health lobby originally believed they were healthier than the alternative, and successfully had the industry switch. Which is a big reason why people say "McDonalds' fries used to be so good.." Because they switched to transfats.
Now it turns out they're extremely harmful to you--they're completely non-essential, unlike saturated fat, and raise levels of bad cholestoral and lower levels of good cholestoral. They're hard to eliminate, and the FDA recommends a maximum of 2g per day, while "none" is best. Note that a large order of fries from McDonalds had 6-8 grams of transfat until they removed it, and many chains like Burger King still have it. I don't know if they've changed it, but last time I checked--a large order of chicken strips from Dairy Queen had a reckless 14 grams.
I'm not a health nut, though I do try to eat well. But I religiously avoid transfat, and generally won't eat places that refuse to not only remove it from their menu, but actively refuse or reluctantly provide even nutritional information, like Applebees, Coldstone Creamery, Outback, etc.
