It’s called stagflation and it’s not unique. We were in a similar economic situation in the late 70s and early 80s. Supply of products are down, wages and economic growth is flat, inflation is up, and government spending is still out of control. It’s a bad place to be.

Q2 GDP estimates range from +0.4% to -1.5%. My guess is it will be negative since Whitehouse.gov is signaling that 2 consecutive quarters of negative GDP does not mean we are in an recession, and that our economy looks totally healthy. We’ll know tomorrow when it gets published. Regardless of that publication, a recession is all but inevitable at this point. It’s just a matter of when in the short term.

There wasn't such a robust hiring spree in the instances of stagflation forty-fifty years ago. We've got lots of money sitting in savings that businesses are dying through the get consumers to spend and they are, as a result, businesses are still hiring left and right anticipating continued growth.

This very well may turn out to be just the consequence of a Fed who kept QE and rock bottom rates going for far too long and interests rates down, but I think something is different now. I expect the GDP growth to be anemic, but still positive, with manufacturing and retail slowing, but service sector and hospitality growth showing larger gains.
