It drove me crazy how elastic the numbers could get. You 'member... you 'member in Taggerung when the Abbey had that many or less, then literally ONE THOUSAND hares showed up to save the day and the Abbess was all "oh np we can support that many for many seasons"?? Women can't do math.
Or remember when in Lord Brocktree where Stonepaw has 50 hares in command and refers to the days in his prime when he'd have hundreds, but previously-written in-universe-later in Mossflower Boar has less than a dozen? UGH.
Also I always figured the moles were meant to be the Welsh or Scots, while the hares were obviously ultra-English, the mice were less so, and the drunk hedgehogs were so clearly Irish that he even called one hedgehog family the "O'Spikes". Ha! ha! Casual racism.
